Resolved Question: do you need a car in newcastle, australia?

I'm moving from Perth, WA to Newcastle, NSW in a month for Uni. I'll be living on campus, so transport from uni to accommodation won't be an issue, however I do want to get a job, ideally as a swimming teacher, and as I don't know how reliable or convenient public transport, I'm concerned that getting from home to work, or anywhere else in newcastle might be an issue. If someone could respond as soon as possible about the reliability etc of public transport in newcastle, and if they think i will need to buy a car, it would be greatly appreciated, thanks :)...
